Florida is probably doing what Russia is accused of doing - putting COVID deaths in the pneumonia column in order to conceal the extent of the outbreak.

Like Teleskiguy I voted for Elizabeth Warren because I thought she would be the best person to take on Trump. The more I see of Joe and see every asshole trying and failing to kneecap him the more I’m convinced that he’s the one we need right now.

I believe he’s only going to serve one term and he is the transitional person to open the door for a more inclusive Democratic Party. Just looking at the map I think Joe’s really down to 3 choices for Vice-President—Catherine Cortez-Masto from Nevada to shore up Latino support, Val Demings to nail down Florida or Stacy Abrams because of those two Senate pickups in Georgia. No doubt in my mind that either one of those three will be the 2024 Democratic nominee running against Pompousass on the GOP side.

#MoscowMitch sees the polls showing he will lose the Senate. He also knows that this time Schumer will be out for blood and then some. He’s trying to stanch the GOP bleeding but I got a feeling we’re going to see a lot of those 14 pickups the GOP took in 2014 go down and go down big.

Elizabeth Warren was my first choice, but by the time the primary reached Nebraska, Elizabeth Warren had bowed out (everyone had bowed out). The choice was clear though: Ridin’ with Biden.

Though it does bring home the point that there IS a downside to promoting “tough on crime” policies.
Though said downside comes seldom, and usually too late.

Pretty much all the social events here in Va Beach have been canceled through the middle of July, including all the big concerts and fireworks displays on July 4th. So while people are going to insist on visiting the beach while the weather’s nice and warm, all the big events that attract huge crowds are gone until at least August.

Gov. Ricketts just issued a new so-called Directed Health Measure for the Panhandle which further loosens restrictions here.

Gatherings of up to 25, or 25% of a venue of capacity up to 3,000, excluding staff, will be permitted starting June 1. (This would allow every church here to fully open as well as every restaurant.)

Those planning to reopen a venue of over 500 must submit a plan to Panhandle Public Health District on social distancing and severe weather.

I can’t say whether she was directly involved, though as county prosecutor she would be in charge of those under her.

As for a grand jury, the ol’ “you can indict a ham sandwich” applies.

The whole rant is…well, it’s certainly something:

CANDACE OWENS (HOST): Scottish people were severely behind the English people, just in terms of everything. And David Hume inspired and uplifted and challenged the Scottish people by saying if we want to get ahead, we have to learn English.

In a matter of years, in a matter of decades, the Scottish people passed the English people in engineering, and in the sciences. And it’s because they challenged themselves to be better, and not to be worse.

They didn’t pretend that somehow having a broken language, having broken-down families was a symbol of who we are. And that is so unique to Black America. I won’t subscribe to it. People say that’s how you have to be Black.

“That’s how you have to be Black”? Listen to your psychological conditioning. If to be Black, you can’t speak in proper English, or you’re “acting white.” Right? To be Black, you instantly have to jump up like a fucking trained chimpanzee - excuse my language - like a trained chimpanzee every single time the media runs a story, and act angry, and riot, and talk about how pained you were to see this happen to Black people, but keep your mouth shut, right, when it happens Black-on-Black because if you talk about the Black-on-Black crime, you’re a race traitor, right?

To be Black, you need to celebrate LeBron James. You’ve got to say that you want to be a football star, right? LeBron James the greatest, right?

When you see someone like Dr. Ben Carson, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, you call that person a coon, because they betrayed you. Do you want to know why? Because they’re talking about economics. They graduated, and they’ve got tons of degrees. They’re not being Black enough. Don’t listen to them. Listen to LeBron James, when he throws on the Beto cap and tells you that we’re literally being hunted down, right? Because he’s not educated, right? Celebrate that. That’s our hero. He represents us.

That is what being Black is in 2020. That is what we are told that being Black must be in 2020. And we are then routinely told that we should be ashamed if we don’t subscribe to that. I do not subscribe to that, okay? I don’t subscribe to that, my family doesn’t subscribe to that, the children that I will have one day will not subscribe to that, okay? That is not an example of Black greatness, that is not an example of American greatness, it’s an example of a broken culture that has been fostered by people that were racists in the 1960s and it’s being perpetuated now by people that are race hustlers in 2020.

For those who may be new to Canned Ass’ shtick, she sued her high school for “racial harassment” because (she claimed) some white students had harassed her and threatened to kill her. She won (with the NAACP’s help) a settlement from the school, went on to graduate, and then dropped out of college to become a “Youtube star.” Now she’s a proud member of the Wingnut Welfare Circuit, being a “trained chimpanzee” for white folks who want to feel good about their racism by assuring them as a black woman that all problems in the black community are their own fault.

The percentage who test positive has been going down slowly.

But the numbers in ICU (for Covid-19) have been slowly increasing. This has to be due to the long term medical intervention, where some Covid ICU patients are there for weeks. Then they die. Sad, but this is the reality of the disease, which is why the deaths in the US are going to be a steady stream all through the lull between the first and second phase of the disease in this country.

Rachel Maddow covered the problems facing local government officials in dealing with the epidemic, particularly focusing on Alabama.

She also notes the twin failure of the national media outlets, which as the virus sweeps inland, the coverage is being mostly dropped.

She points out that one of the things national media outlets could do is focus on local media outlets to get a better handle on what’s happening away from the coasts.

For us here, we just see it as the Flyover Country effect: If it’s occurring in Flyover Country, it’s not occurring. Meat packing plants get covered because they affect people on the coasts, but the towns they’re in don’t get covered. As for the rest, it’s like they don’t exist. Seen any coverage of Weld County, Colorado’s disaster other than the numbers I post here?

Weld County has one-sixth of the total cases of Nebraska, and sixty percent of the deaths of Nebraska. They have less than one-tenth of our state’s population.

If it was just visiting the Oceanfront and staying apart from strangers, sunning or swimming (does Virginia Beach still have the “no fun at all” signs they had when I was there along the boardwalk), it wouldn’t be a problem. Being outside is safer.

Packing the clubs and hotels along the Oceanfront is the problem.

When the evangelical/dominionist crowd argue that atheist/agnostics/etc “have no morals” or that you “can’t have moral without religion,” it’s not really morals that they’re talking about. At least not as society these days generally interprets the word. No, when they blather such shite, what they’re really saying is “We have no way to shame those people, and thus no way of controlling them.”

The problem for them in modern times is that shame isn’t what it used to be. Society doesn’t put as much value as it once did on where you pray or who your pulpit pimp is or how much you drop in the collection plate. If anything, the growth of social media and “alt-news” has turned such things into liabilities. Where once church scandals were isolated matters, something that was whispered about over Sunday dinner but never spoken out loud, now they’re major news that leads to a lot of very uncomfortable conversations for the faithful. It’s hard to argue that you’ve any level of “moral authority” when you’re caught paying altar boys to stay quiet.

re: #70 Targetpractice

A great number of religious people (Christian, Muslim, &c) believe that “no faith” equals “no morals.”

I’ve heard that from people here … really? Really? Have you ever seen anything immoral from either my wife or me in the eight+ years we’ve lived here?

Most often, it seems to be learned by rote at a young age. “Those people” are immoral because they lack God.

Though politicians aren’t highly thought of as moral people (hashtag notallpoliticians), suddenly there’s a morality test when someone runs for office, and it’s “what church do you attend?”

There are more open Muslims in Congress (about 1% of the populace) than there are atheists (depending on your definition, about 20%, and there are no open atheists).

My state has the most open atheists in the state legislature (two).

A common apologetic is that a person making an argument “needs God” to be a moral person (often given in the context of rape, robbery, or murder).

The counter-apologetic is usually “if you need God to keep you from raping or killing, by all means don’t give up your religion.”

China’s legislature endorsed a national security law for Hong Kong on Thursday that has strained relations with the United States and Britain and prompted protests in the territory.

The National People’s Congress backed the bill as it wrapped up an annual session that was held under intensive anti-coronavirus controls. The vote was 2,878 to 1, in line with the high-profile but largely ceremonial body’s custom of near-unanimous approval of legal changes decided by the ruling Communist Party.

The Hong Kong security law will alter the territory’s mini-constitution, or Basic Law, to require the territory to enforce measures to be decided by the standing committee of the NPC, a small body controlled by the ruling Communist Party that handles most lawmaking work.

apnews.com

IIRC, Hong Kong’s Legislative Council will have to approve this as well - and then it’s a done deal.

And then the PLA rolls in to “restore order”.

The whole rant is…well, it’s certainly something:

“Scottish people were severely behind the English people, just in terms of everything. And David Hume inspired and uplifted and challenged the Scottish people by saying if we want to get ahead, we have to learn English.”

This sounds less like actual Scottish history, and more like a wonky Hollywood movie where everyone’s going around in kilts, and then in comes David Hume, like a Celtic George Washington, and boom, they’ve become engineers and so on.

Or maybe, just maybe, a Scottish Enlightenment happened in parallel with other European Enlightenments. Seriously, just read the link, and compare it to the above paragraph, and see if you can notice any similarity whatsoever.

Fuck Trump and Fuck the GOP. Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area, as we learn that not only have more than 100,000 Americans died, but states like Florida are misclassifying covid19 deaths - treating them as pneumonia instead of covid19, and that new government data shows that 25% of the American workforce has sought unemployment benefits since March. Trump’s economic wrecking crew has been successful in ruining the nation in every way imaginable, and even this morning he was retweeting threats of physical violence against Democrats in New Mexico.

This ruinous regime has no bottom. The GOP doesn’t care. They’re bottom feeding and hoping to suppress turnout to remain in power at any cost.

That’s where we are today.

So let’s turn to each of the aformentioned items in turn.

Misclassifying deaths will get exposed as you look at excess mortality and that there’s no new factor in 2020 other than covid19, so those deaths being classified as pneumonia are actually covid19. That’d add thousands to the tally of covid19 deaths in Florida. Far from being a safe haven, it’s just misrepresenting the numbers.

Unemployment:

Trump retweets a cowboys for trump tweet that includes threats of physical violence. Yeah, Trump’s fucking evil and doesn’t care. Twitter doesn’t give a shit either. They wont ban Trump (he’s their cash cow). And they have the ability to block all these fuckers and trolls with the algorithms, but wont because they’re eyeballs and generate revenue for the company.

Heh, I’ve always referred to it as a “Hollywood stop”.

as someone who’s been through this a couple of times, I’m pretty sure I’m right in believing that the rolling stop is likely the moving violation that angers recipients more than pretty much anything else. It’s completely open to interpretation, and there’s pretty much no way of fighting it in court. The first time, I actually put on a suit, went to traffic court, pleaded not guilty and demanded a jury trial. Then had to put a suit on again two months later so that I could go see the prosecutor and plead down to failure to exercise due caution. Why? Because it’s a fucking 4 point ticket is why. Basically, failing to come to a complete stop and rolling is more fucking points than going 25 miles over the speed limit. And it is the same points as disregarding the stop sign completely and blowing through. The second time I got ticketed for it, I just didn’t have the energy to fuck around with the court system, and I just paid the money and took the insurance hit.

That’s too bad. My aunt is into ballooning and went to the festival a few times with some friends of hers. On my dads 70th birthday (she is dads sister) she had a friend of hers that she balloons with from Ohio come out to dads house and give him a ride. re: #107 steve_davis

Back in the day, I was driving in Brooklyn not long after I got my license. I was with friends and we were driving to another friend when I was on a side street with a stop sign. This was at an intersection with a major street that did not have a stop sign (2 travel lanes and a parking lane.

I stopped back where the sign was, but then inched up because there were cars all the way to the corner on both the side street and the main street. Little did I know that there was also a cop car coming up in the travel lane closest to the parking lane.

Flashing lights went on. I stopped. License and registration provided. Questions were asked. I responded that I stopped where the sign said, but due to the cars being within 25 feet of the corner (a violation), I could not safely proceed into the intersection, so it looked like I did a rolling stop. Had I not inched up, I would have hit the cop car.

The NYPD officer went back, ran the plates and license, and sent me on my way saying to remain cautious/vigilant.

Looking back, I now think that if I were a POC, I probably would have been pulled from the car, and given a ticket at a minimum.

I mean, it’s also “credible” that Joe Biden is financing his campaign by using that black mask and sunglasses as a disguise to rob liquor stores - not VERY credible (no more, it seems, than Tara Reade’s ever-changing narrative(s)) - but shouldn’t that also be “overlooked” as an excuse to vote for him….??

Great piece here from the Guardian:

In one of the rare expressions of empathy that Donald Trump has displayed during the course of the coronavirus pandemic, he talked earlier this month about the disease claiming so many lives it was “filling up Yankee Stadium with death”.

Now the death toll from Covid-19 stands at almost twice the capacity of the Yankees’ home stadium, and has reached another booming landmark: 100,000 deaths.

A country that prides itself on its exceptionalism can now without ambiguity claim that title for its experience of the virus. The United States stands head and shoulders at the top of the world league table of confirmed cases, as well as the total number of deaths.

There will be much to analyze in coming years about how the US responded to this contagion, including how many lives have been lost needlessly as a result of Trump’s maverick response.

Already one lesson of the pandemic is clear: America’s deep and brutal fault lines - of race, partisanship, gender, poverty and misinformation - rendered the country ill-prepared to meet the challenges of this disease. The ravages of Covid-19 have revealed the deep cracks in the glittering facade of the richest and most powerful nation on Earth.

I strongly recommend reading the whole thing.

Wednesday morning around 0900 I went to grocery store where about 75% of shoppers were wearing masks. One clown, not wearing a mask, started giving me a ration of shit about my mask. I explained to him that, as a medic, I have contact with sick people, I don’t know what I may be spreading, so, I wear a mask to protect people from me. He went on a rant that Trump would have been proud of.

Shortly after 2300 hours Wednesday night, we were dispatched for 72 year old male difficulty breathing, chest pains. Got on the scene — BP was 200/105; pulse was 80-90; respirations 20-22, rapid and shallow, O2 sats 88%; severe wheezing on exhale and inhale. ECG showed normal sinus rhythm — this guy was in serious respiratory distress. Low O2 would soon lead to cardiac difficulty, so, I had to get his breathing to normal and get some oxygen in him.

Loaded him in the ambulance and hauled ass for the hospital 35 miles away. Meanwhile, I put him on albuterol-Atrovent nebulizer, CPAP and high-flow O2, got his respiration almost to normal, got his BP down a bit; O2 sats came up to low 90%; lung sounds still wheezing; basically saved his life.

By now you have probably guessed he was the same guy who accosted me at the grocery store. And, yes, he recognized me enroute to the ER.

Jack Dorsey Assures Twitter Users That Company Having Most Idiotic Possible Internal Conversations About Trump’s Account

“Believe me when I say that our top dimwits are engaged in absolutely fucking moronic discussions about what Trump tweets. Our emails and Slack channels are full of cringingly short-sighted and searingly stupid ideas, because at Twitter we address concerns as thoughtlessly and with as little intelligence as we can. We want our users to understand that no matter what side of this or any issue you fall on, we promise to find a resolution that doesn’t solve anything, exacerbates the problem, and makes everyone mad.” At press time, Dorsey responded to outcry by assuring Twitter users that all of their most idiotic and bafflingly uninformed suggestions were being heard.

Someone here posted this week about how Boogaloo guys were heading to Minneapolis to cause violence. I have that post in mind when I read all the stories about how Minneapolis erupted in violence last night.

Minneapolis shuddered with violence overnight Wednesday, as rioters ignited fires and looted stores all over the city, standing in stark contrast to the mostly peaceful protests outside of a South Side police station over the police killing of George Floyd.

Early Thursday, city and law enforcement officials were still tallying the full toll of the night, which saw at least five people struck by gunfire, one fatally when the owner of a pawn shop opened fire on a man he believed was burglarizing his business. Dozens of businesses were either looted or torched, or both, mostly in the area of Minnehaha Avenue and E. Lake Street, but also along business corridors on the city’s North and South sides.

From bits and pieces I’ve seen on line today, it looks like the “EO” is supposed to involve DoJ/ AG Barr wasting government lawyers’ time setting up some sort of “monitoring” project for social media (?).

What if they monitor for threats of violence? Though it can be a challenge to distinguish between hyperbole and a true threat when an algorithm is looking at posts. On many a past occasion I have said I was going to kill someone — where “kill” meant criticizing the target.

The nuts seem to be missing* the point that police are not intended to be warriors trained to kill. Killing is a position of last resort. Police are supposed to be a civil support group for helping serve the public and be an immediate (and local) ability to help with disorder and citizen needs.

* - Though “kill or be kill”, fostering fear (and using it as a excuse to kill “others”), and being prepared to be a force of oppression might well be the point to them.

Apropos of nothing in particular, but could our stupid media stop making it seem like an economic recovery is on the horizon now that there are fewer people applying for UI benefits?

This is misleading as hell. Yeah fewer people are applying because there’s FORTY MILLION people who lost their jobs and countless others who either don’t qualify for benefits or have exhausted benefits and are no longer counted in the numbers.

The lack of just basic critical thinking in this country is depressing as fuck.

This is because it was not a gradual climb as in most economic downturns, but a rapid spike resulting from a crisis.

Chatted with the investment advisor who handles my accounts at my bank (much of it an inheritance from my late uncle); he told me yesterday that the bank itself (Canadian bank) believes that there will be major recovery starting in late August, though he personally believes the recovery will be starting in January. Of course, their definition of recovery may relate solely to the market.

But who knows what will actually be happening to the real economy? Can we really trust any of the statistics from the government in a Trump administration? I feel like the mirror image of the ODS racists who disbelieved everything from the Obama administration. Florida handling of the pandemic certainly is an illustration of how statistics can be manipulated.

Chester County, PA COVID-19 stats:
Confirmed Cases: 2,595
Deaths: 248 (+6?)

Like I surmised, the on-the-fly data updates make day to day difference tracking inaccurate. Yesterday’s +6 confirmed cases is now +31.

Doubling rate on confirmed cases is over 30 now - data only goes back a month on the county web site I’m using.

Total tests around 14,000. County pop is ~525,000. Obviously insufficient for a general reopening of businesses. Piled onto this is GOP state reps testing positive for COVID-19 and not being open about this beyond telling their fellow GOP legislators. I guess the facts weren’t playing well with their “reopen the state” rhetoric aimed at the governor.
